Spring Portraits in Maryland

For some reason, Autumn seems to be the most popular season for family portraits, but Spring is just as nice. I think one reason that the fall photography season is busier, might be that clients like to use the photos on their holiday cards. Another reason is the leaves on the trees in Maryland change colors in October and many people love the colorful foliage in their images. But I would suggest that even though that fall foliage is stunning, not to discount the color palette that the spring season provides.

Weather in Maryland

Depending on the climate of where you live, some months of the year work better for outdoor portraits. Maryland family photographer, Rebecca Leigh Photography, most enjoys outdoor portraits during the months of April-October, when the weather is comfortable. Children in general, are going to be happiest for photo sessions when they are warm and not freezing with cold winds.

Soft Color Palette for Spring Portraits in Maryland

Spring colors photograph so nicely for my editing style. I love to incorporate soft pastels and muted tones in portraits. This includes the outfits that clients wear, as well as the color tones in the environment. In Maryland, spring flowers begin to surface in March. So by April, we are likely to have some beautiful blooms in our background.

For beautiful cherry blossom blooms, one of my favorite locations to photograph is at Centennial Park in Maryland. Another favorite is the Howard County Conservancy in Woodstock, Maryland. I love being in nature, and this place is so beautiful and peaceful. It has plenty of gorgeous backdrops to enhance your photographs. While I do think family portraits can be taken anywhere with the right lighting, having some flowers in the background adds a nice touch.

So if you are considering family portraits this year, maybe the Spring season will provide you with portraits that you’ll love just as much as fall backgrounds. Especially if you lean more towards a soft color palette instead of jewel tones. Here is some family session information that pertains to outdoor sessions during the Spring season.

Session Length

The family session lasts up to 1 hour.  If we get all the images we need in 30 to 45 minutes, then we can wrap up the session sooner.  It just depends on your family’s needs, the ages of your children, and the location where we are photographing. Usually we try to get at least one good “smile at the camera” portrait and the rest of the session should be fun while you interact with your children. The best smiles come when the kids get to play and laugh together as a family.

What to Wear for Spring Portraits with Maryland Family Photographer

I recommend wearing a combination of neutral colors and muted color tones to most complement my editing style and the environment in which we photograph.  Outfits should look nice together without having to match.  Some light neutrals, such as white, ivory, beige, tan, or light gray, pair well with the color tones you choose.  Solid color outfits with textures are great, along with subtle floral patterns with soft colors work well.  Avoid bold patterns, neon colors, logos, and characters.  Don’t forget shoes such as loafers, instead of sports sneakers. You will receive more details and outfit suggestions when you book.

When to Schedule as Session Date

I recommend booking a session at least 1-2 months in advance, if possible, to give you time to coordinate your outfits and prepare for the session. But I happily accept clients as long as I have availability, so please reach out, even if you are requesting a date a couple of weeks out.  I only take a limited number of sessions each month so that I can accommodate all of my scheduled clients.
