Why do I love being a family photographer in Baltimore MD? There are many reasons, including the seasons, the weather, locations, and the families I photograph.
Many of my clients come to me for newborn photos and then return for family portraits as their children grow. When I get the opportunity to photograph outdoor family sessions and see those babies grow up, it is so special. It feels like getting together with friends.
Artistically, every sunset photo session is so much fun for me with my camera. My clients put effort into coordinating their outfits and to complement the environment in their pictures. As the photographer who gets to see this all come together, it is very exciting! When the sunlight falls just right in the background, and parents are playing with their children, and the colors look gorgeous, it is so satisfying!
In Baltimore, MD, we are lucky to have beautiful seasons. Spring, summer, and fall are especially my favorite seasons for outdoor photography. I do like snow photos, but I don’t really want to be out in the cold anymore while my clients are freezing. I’ve photographed many below freezing sessions, and I can confidently say that ship has passed. So the winter season is a nice respite to recharge and be ready to photograph outdoor photo sessions in the spring.
Spring is one of my favorites because of the beautiful flower blooms in the area. We have cherry blossom trees, tulips, and many other pretty flowers for a photographer in Baltimore MD to photograph.
Summer can be quite humid, but I wouldn’t let that stop you from a photo session before sunset. It really is so fun for kids to be outside in the warm weather and many of my locations have gorgeous blooms.
Fall in Baltimore Maryland is full of colorful foliage and seeing those leaves change color every year never gets old. We really only have a few weeks to enjoy the visual show, and then the leaves drop and the backgrounds look pretty drab. The one exception I can think of is the golden grasses that stay for awhile in November and I love that as a background.
Weather in Baltimore can be a bit unpredictable at times. We are known to have unseasonably warm or cold days in the shoulder seasons. Just recently (in late March), I was wearing a winter coat one day and then 2 days later it was 80 degrees and we were outside in tank tops and shorts, sweating, playing tennis.
Those unseasonably warm days are usually quite welcome, especially in early spring, after a long and cold winter. Conversely, in early November, it is usually getting colder, but we can still get some warmer days. In years past, I have had photo sessions scheduled in early November where it was below freezing with a wind chill and that wasn’t too fun!
Aside from the temperature swings that still happen in November and March, the months of April to October, usually prove to be a lovely time for photos. Generally, the temperatures will be pleasant enough that coats aren’t needed and my clients don’t have to freeze! Being a photographer in Baltimore MD, it is important that clients are comfortable and I often suggest to take outdoor photos in that April to October timeframe, just for comfort.
If it is supposed to rain the day of a client’s session, then we will watch the weather until a few hours before and decide if we should reschedule.
I am located in Ellicott City, in Howard County Maryland, which is very close to Baltimore. Some of my favorite outdoor photography locations include the Howard County Conservancy, Centennial Park, and the grounds at the Shrine of Saint Anthony. On occasion I will travel to Brookside Gardens or Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park for sessions. Each one of these places have a unique look and will give us variety for backgrounds in your photos.
Every family has their own dynamics, and don’t be afraid to interact with your child during your session, the way you would at home. Have fun and be yourself.
As a mother of 3 children, I cherish every photo of my little ones, no matter what they are doing in them. Photographs are the sweet reminders of how cute each stage of development was, so I can remember their personalities. For example, my youngest went through a stage where he was obsessed with superheroes. He wore the costumes around the house.
He is also an artist like me, so he drew the characters all the time. Not only did he draw pages and pages of superheroes, he also drew on himself. That’s right, on more than one occasion, he used a marker to draw 6 pack abs on his own stomach. The hilarity of the marker drawn abs still makes me laugh to this day.
While we may not be photographing your kids dressed as superheroes at your photo session, you’ll likely get some photos with your child’s unique facial expressions. Your session should be tailored to your preferences, so if you want to document your family in your everyday clothing just playing around at home, then, sure, we can do that too!

Outdoor family sessions are usually scheduled within two hours before sunset. We play outside in nature during your session, while you explore with your children.
