Cherishing thoughts of your family and children for years to come can be more than just a memory.  Let's photograph this special time now, so you can remember the little details that you love about your family. As a former art teacher with a Masters in Art Education, the visual arts are my forte. My love for the arts and the joy of being a mother of 3 children, naturally inspired me to become a Maryland maternity photographer.

My Maryland maternity photography style includes simple and authentic portraits of you during this very special time in your life. We will focus on you looking at your belly, with a combination of full body and close-up belly portraits. For family portraits we will photograph moments of you looking at and interacting with your spouse and children. You have the option to only photograph yourself for maternity portraits, but immediate family portraits are included.

Prompts for Natural Interactions

My Session Style

Maternity Gowns or Casual Apparel

Clients love a nice flowy gown that accentuates their growing belly.  I provide a client closet of bump-friendly dresses for moms and girls, or you can wear your own. I can help style you by providing links to dresses if you want to buy your own.

Dads can keep it simple with a white, cream, beige, light gray, Henley shirt or button down shirt and khaki or chino pants, or jeans in a lighter shade.  This makes it easier to coordinate the outfits with what dad wears. Prefer more casual? You can dress in jeans and simple white button down shirt for an understated look in the studio or your home.

From Maternity to Newborn Photos

Time of Day

One reason I love to work with expectant mothers for both their MD maternity and newborn photos, is that we can plan creative images to pair together from both sessions.  I have several poses that we can photograph while your baby is in your belly and then again with your baby in your arms.  These side by side images can be very sweet and look cohesive together as my editing style will be consistent.

Maryland maternity sessions are scheduled on weekday mornings starting between 10am and 2pm in my home studio located in Ellicott City, MD or in your home. If you choose outdoor maternity portraits, check out my family portfolio page too. Outdoor maternity portraits take place during the 2 hours before sunset.

Newborn sessions, 6+ months, and one year portraits are client favorites. Rebecca Leigh Photography loves to welcome back babies for sitter sessions and first year portraits, with or without a cake smash, both of which also include family portraits.  All of these images will go perfectly together in a First Year Album or a linen covered matted print box. And guess who will love to look at this album, besides you? Your baby!

I'll email you maternity session information. You'll have the option to schedule a free phone consultation or we can communicate through email. I will email you a digital proposal with a contract to sign and an invoice to pay the Creative Fee to reserve your session.

"It was so easy getting in touch with Becky. She was incredibly prompt in responding and answering our questions. From inquiring to booking — maybe all of 30 minutes!

She came highly recommended from a friend. We took one look at her social media and knew she was the photographer for us. The quality and attention to detail is super evident and her work is nothing short of top-notch talent. You can also tell she truly loves what she does!

She is so prepared and careful when shooting newborns. From her cloth gloves to avoid cold hands, to the thoughtfully placed space heaters, to the baby shusher sound machine. She could not have done anything additional to create a more comforting environment for all; especially baby!

Book her ASAP!! You will not be disappointed!"

"From the beginning to the end of the process, Becky was attentive and responsive. She made the booking process very easy. The photography session is understandably long, but Becky made sure we were comfortable and had what we needed for those middle of the session feeding and changing breaks. Becky was extremely patient and gentle when it came to dressing and positioning our little man, which can only come from the years of experience she possesses.

She has so many options for colors, fabrics, backgrounds and props that it is hard to choose just a few! Becky understood the types of poses we were looking for and the end products are amazing! We are so happy with our photos, and had a fantastic experience!"

Tips & Advice

I generally only photograph outdoor sessions April - October when the weather in Maryland is most pleasant and comfortable for not wearing coats.  The studio is available year round. One pro of an indoor studio session is the ability to match the look from a maternity session to your newborn session.  This will make creating side by side framed artwork look more cohesive if you pair a maternity image with a newborn image.

In a multi-session album, your images will be more cohesive and have a similar appearance if all photographed in the same setting.  One pro of an outdoor session is more variety in the photo compositions due to the various backgrounds, and movement in the photos.  Outdoors you will have more pulled back photos of you and your family, in addition to close-up images.

I recommend booking a session at least 2 months in advance, if possible, to give you time to coordinate your outfits and prepare for the session. But I happily accept clients as long as I have availability, so please reach out, even if you are requesting a date a couple of weeks out.  I only take a limited number of sessions each month so that I can accommodate all of my scheduled clients.  The fall season books up the fastest, so make sure to book in advance.

Should we take studio or outdoor maternity portraits?

When do we schedule a session date with our Maryland maternity photographer?

frequently Asked Questions

When should we take our Maryland maternity photos?

Maternity photos are usually recommended between 20-34 weeks. Maternity portraits can be taken in the studio all year. Rebecca photographs outdoor family maternity sessions during the months of April - October, when the weather in Maryland is most comfortable for not having to wear a coat. Comfortable kids are happier!

How long is a maternity photo session?

The studio or outdoor maternity session lasts up to 1 hour.  If we get all the images we need in 30 to 45 minutes, then we can wrap up the session sooner.  It just depends on your family's needs, the ages of your children, and the location where we are photographing.

What should we wear for the photoshoot?

As a Maryland maternity photographer, I recommend wearing a combination of neutral colors and muted color tones to most complement my editing style and the environment in which we photograph.  Outfits should look nice together without having to match.  Some light neutrals, such as white, ivory, beige, tan, or light gray, pair well with the color tones you choose.

Solid color outfits with textures are great, along with subtle floral patterns with soft colors work well.  Avoid bold patterns, neon colors, logos, and characters.  Don't forget shoes such as loafers, instead of sports sneakers, but Converse style is okay.  You will receive more details and outfit suggestions when you book.
