Cherishing thoughts of your family and children for years to come can be more than just a memory. Let's photograph this special time now, so you can remember the little details that you love about your newborn and your family. As a former art teacher with a Masters in Art Education, the visual arts are my forte. My love for the arts and the joy of being a mother of 3 children, naturally inspired me to offer newborn photography in Columbia MD.
The client experience with Rebecca Leigh Photography can be described as hands-on and custom to your family, from start to finish. Your photography experience should make planning easy for you and result in images that you’ll love to look at in your home forever.

If you know you would love to have portraits of your baby and family, but are not sure where to start, don’t worry! Just complete the contact form and I will respond with all the information you need to know, and the option to set-up a free phone consultation. You will be guided through what to wear and how to prepare for your session. You’ll have access to the client wardrobe if desired, which is especially helpful for newborn studio sessions. Imagine just being able to arrive at the session with your baby and not having to buy a dress ahead of time, wondering how well it will photograph.
During the session, I will guide you with prompts for photographing natural family interactions. Newborn sessions will also include some skilled wrapping techniques and gentle posing for solo newborn portraits. If you have kids with personality, then no problem. I am a former certified k-12 art teacher and mom of 3, with plenty of experience working with children. So I will join in the fun as we photograph your session. Outdoor family sessions will be like play time.
Our main goal is to create images you can enjoy with your children for years to come. During the session, clients lament how adorable their newborn looks sleeping in their arms or posed in a swaddle. Preserving these memories in the form of artwork, is something to think about before we work together. This will help us both understand what family combinations and style of photos you like best, and how you intend to display your memories, such as on your walls or in an album.
My Columbia newborn photography style includes a combination of gentle posing, using skilled wrapping techniques and pillow positioners underneath fabrics, along with some baby led posing. For family portraits we will photograph moments of you looking at, and interacting with your baby.
Family portraits will be standing and seated by white sheers to create the look of window light. There is also a bedroom set-up which is great for comfortably gathering siblings, parents, and a newborn together, creating more of an in-home lifestyle look.
I usually recommend that everyone in the family wears light, neutral colors or muted color tones for your Maryland or Columbia newborn photos. I provide a client closet of a dresses for moms and girls, or you can wear your own. View all my beautiful options here!
Dads can keep it simple with a white, cream, beige, light gray, Henley shirt or button down shirt and khaki or chino pants, or jeans in a lighter shade. This makes it easier to coordinate the dresses and baby wraps with what dad wears.
One of the best compliments that I often hear from my clients is how patient I am with their baby. As a Columbia MD newborn photographer I am very conscientious with handling newborns and I am very patient and laid back about how the session goes.
As a mother of 3 babies, I understand that every baby is different and some need more time to feed or soothed for whatever reason. I want my clients to feel comfortable and not rushed, and we just go with the flow of your baby. A chill vibe is the best for working with babies.
Maryland newborn sessions are scheduled on weekday mornings at 10am in my home studio located in Ellicott City or in your home. In the studio I have all of the equipment I need to carefully pose your baby if you would like tummy poses and a few prop poses such as the bowl or basket.
Newborn portraits in your Columbia or Maryland home are 100% lifestyle and will include family interacting with your baby as well as solo newborn portraits in the crib or on your bed. A home filled with natural light is best.

"It was so easy getting in touch with Becky. She was incredibly prompt in responding and answering our questions. From inquiring to booking — maybe all of 30 minutes!
She came highly recommended from a friend. We took one look at her social media and knew she was the photographer for us. The quality and attention to detail is super evident and her work is nothing short of top-notch talent. You can also tell she truly loves what she does!
She is so prepared and careful when shooting newborns. From her cloth gloves to avoid cold hands, to the thoughtfully placed space heaters, to the baby shusher sound machine. She could not have done anything additional to create a more comforting environment for all; especially baby!
Book her ASAP!! You will not be disappointed!"

" Becky is very kind to work with. She is engaging with the entire family. She is extremely patient with children and knows how to engage them to make it more fun. Becky has an eye for catching intimate family moments to look back on for life. We have used her several times from holiday minis to newborn photographs and will continue to in the future!"

"From the beginning to the end of the process, Becky was attentive and responsive. She made the booking process very easy. The photography session is understandably long, but Becky made sure we were comfortable and had what we needed for those middle of the session feeding and changing breaks. Becky was extremely patient and gentle when it came to dressing and positioning our little man, which can only come from the years of experience she possesses.
She has so many options for colors, fabrics, backgrounds and props that it is hard to choose just a few! Becky understood the types of poses we were looking for and the end products are amazing! We are so happy with our photos, and had a fantastic experience!"

"Rebecca was so kind and quick to respond when I first reached out to her. The photos speak for themselves! Every picture in her gallery is perfect and looks like a painting. I wanted someone who was trained and comfortable with posing babies and Rebecca is definitely that person!
There were so many little touches like a personalized sign, snacks, and a changing table that made the whole experience so comfortable and stress-free! Becky also went above and beyond to incorporate stars into my photoshoot as we requested so that it could match my son's nursery. Those pictures are so special to my family!
The photos were stunning even before we got the final edited versions, Becky is so talented! If you are considering working with Rebecca - DO IT! She goes above and beyond for her clients! The pictures turned out so beautiful and perfectly captured all of the little newborn details I never want to forget."
I recommend booking a session at least 3 months before your due date, if possible. But I happily accept clients as long as I have availability, so please reach out, even if your baby has already arrived! I only take a limited number of sessions each month so that I can accommodate all of my scheduled clients.
When do we schedule a session date with our Columbia newborn photographer?
Ideally, newborn portraits are best photographed when the baby is between 5-14 days old, if you would like sleepy newborn poses. However, newborns can be photographed at any time! I recommend by 6 weeks old.
HOW LONG IS A STUDIO NEWBORN SESSION?
Studio Newborn sessions typically last 2-3 hours. This allows time to take care of your baby's needs (feeding, diaper changing, soothing) throughout the session.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE SESSION?
During the session we will photograph your newborn solo, sibling(s) with newborn, and family with newborn. I offer a variety of clean and well-maintained baby wraps, outfits, blankets, hats, headbands, baskets, buckets, and backdrops for your selection during the session.
Your Maryland or Columbia newborn photo session will be tailored to your preferences in regards to color choices and poses. There is no need to bring any outfits or props for your newborn. Everything is provided. A client wardrobe of dresses is provided for moms and girls.
